What to Expect During a Luxury Italian Kitchen Installation

Installing a luxury Italian kitchen is unlike any standard renovation project. Systems from manufacturers like Boffi, Poliform, and Molteni&C are engineered with extraordinary precision — and they demand the same level of care during installation. If you're a homeowner, designer, or architect about to embark on this process, here's exactly what to expect from start to finish.

Phase 1: The Pre-Installation Site Survey

Before any cabinetry arrives at your home, our team conducts a comprehensive site assessment. This isn't a casual walkthrough — it's a detailed technical evaluation that sets the foundation for the entire project.

We use laser-guided measuring tools to verify every dimension against the manufacturer's shop drawings. Even millimeter discrepancies between the original architectural drawings and the as-built conditions can create problems during installation. Italian kitchen systems are manufactured to exact specifications, so the site must match those specs precisely.

During this phase, we also evaluate wall flatness, floor levelness, plumbing and electrical positions, and load-bearing capacity for heavy stone countertops. If anything is off, we coordinate with your general contractor to correct it before the installation date.

The difference between a good installation and a perfect one is almost always determined by what happens before the cabinets arrive on site. Preparation is everything.

Phase 2: Delivery & Logistics Coordination

Italian kitchen systems ship in carefully sequenced crates — sometimes a dozen or more for a single kitchen. Each crate contains specific components that must be unpacked and installed in order. A Boffi kitchen, for instance, may arrive in separate shipments for the base units, wall units, paneling, and countertop.

We coordinate the delivery window with your building management (critical in NYC), ensure freight elevator availability, and stage materials in the correct order within your space. For Manhattan high-rises, we often schedule deliveries during early morning windows to avoid building conflicts.

Phase 3: The Installation Process

This is where the craft truly shows. A typical luxury Italian kitchen installation takes between 3 to 7 working days, depending on complexity. Our team works methodically through a proven sequence:

Day 1–2: Base cabinet installation. We begin by establishing a perfectly level reference line around the room. Base units are assembled (some arrive fully assembled, others flat-packed) and secured to the wall and floor. Each unit is individually leveled using micro-adjustment legs — we aim for tolerances under 0.5mm across the entire run.

Day 2–3: Wall units and tall cabinets. Upper cabinetry is hung using the manufacturer's specific rail system. Brands like Poliform use a concealed French cleat system that allows for fine adjustment after hanging. Every unit must align perfectly in all three dimensions — height, depth, and lateral position.

Day 3–4: Panel work and fillers. End panels, filler strips, and decorative elements are fitted. This is where Italian kitchens separate themselves from the rest — the panel-to-panel alignment and gap consistency is what gives these kitchens their seamless, architectural quality.

Day 4–5: Appliance integration. Built-in appliances from Gaggenau, Miele, or Sub-Zero are slotted into their designated openings. Door panels are mounted and aligned with the surrounding cabinetry. Flush-mount integration is standard on luxury projects — the appliance door should sit perfectly in plane with adjacent cabinet doors.

Day 5–7: Countertop and final fitting. Stone or composite countertops are templated, fabricated off-site, and installed with precision. Sink cutouts, cooktop openings, and edge profiles must match the manufacturer's specifications exactly. Final hardware mounting, soft-close adjustments, and lighting integration complete the installation.

Phase 4: The Final Walkthrough

This is the most important day — and where many installers fall short. We conduct a joint walkthrough with you (and your designer, if applicable) to inspect every aspect of the installation:

Any items that don't meet our standards go on a punch list for immediate correction. We don't consider a project complete until every item is resolved.

What Makes Italian Kitchen Installation Different?

The core difference is tolerance. Standard American cabinetry is typically installed to tolerances of 3–5mm. Italian luxury systems demand tolerances under 1mm — often under 0.5mm. This level of precision requires specialized tools, factory training, and a fundamentally different mindset about what "installed" means.

Additionally, Italian systems use proprietary hardware and assembly methods. A Poliform kitchen uses different mounting systems than a Boffi, which differs from a Molteni. Attempting to install these with general cabinetry experience often leads to costly mistakes — misaligned panels, damaged finishes, or voided manufacturer warranties.

Choosing the Right Installer

When selecting an installation team for your luxury Italian kitchen, ask these questions:

  1. Have you installed this specific brand before? Each manufacturer has unique systems that require hands-on experience.
  2. Do you have factory training? The best installers have completed training programs directly with the manufacturers.
  3. Can you provide references from designers? Interior designers and architects who work with luxury kitchens regularly know which installers deliver consistent quality.
  4. What is your approach to site preparation? Any installer who skips or rushes the site survey is a red flag.
  5. How do you handle post-installation service? Italian kitchens may need seasonal adjustments as materials settle. Your installer should offer ongoing support.

A luxury kitchen is only as good as its installation. The finest Italian cabinetry in the world will look and function poorly if it's installed without the precision it was designed for.
